Istanbul - Diabetic Paul Farrelly (52), the winner of Bayer Diabetes Care DreamFund 2008 competition, started his “European Cycling Challenge” of 3200 kilometres from Portsmouth, UK to Istanbul, Turkey. Farrelly will cycle across Europe, across where more than 50 million living with diabetes, and participate in activities to be organized for educating diabetes patients. He will cycle about 70 miles every day during his cycling marathon which will end by the beginning of June in Istanbul, Turkey.

Paul Farrelly, who was been suffering from Type 1 diabetes since 2000, says: “I am committed to helping educate people across Europe about the importance of managing diabetes effectively. I want to prove that you can live a normal life and reach your goals despite the chronic disorder.”

He hopes that his example encourages other patients to fulfill their dreams: “This ride will be really tough and I will be monitoring my blood glucose levels on a very regular basis with a mobile blood glucose monitoring system. The latest developments in medical technology simplify the life with diabetes and give us the chance to pursue our dreams.”

During his trip, Paul Farrelly will stop over in many European cities including Paris, Leverkusen, Prague, Vienna, Budapest and Sofia. While crossing the continent, Farrelly will be updating his web site at http://www.bayerdiabetes.co.uk/europeancyclechallenge/ in order to share his experiences with other fellow diabetes patients.

The Bayer Diabetes Care DreamFund - which has been running since 2006 - is a unique competition, offering people with diabetes the opportunity to apply for a grant to help them make their ‘dreams come true’.
