Istanbul – Diabetic Paul Farrelly (52), the winner of Bayer Diabetes Care DreamFund 2008
competition, finished his “European Cycling Challenge” of 3200 kilometres from Portsmouth, UK to
Istanbul, Turkey. Farrelly was welcomed by 4 Turkish cyclists at Dereköy gate on Bulgaria-Turkey
boarder on Saturday, May 30th, and was accompanied by them till arriving to Istanbul. While passing
through Istanbul, more Turkish cyclists joined the escort convoy and Farrelly, together with more
than 10 cyclists arrived in Ortaköy in the morning of Tuesday, June 2nd.
Paul Farrelly and the cyclists were welcomed by Professor Dr. Temel Yılmaz, President of Turkish Diabetes Foundation, and Dr. Sebastian Guth, Bayer Türk CEO, as well as the members of Turkish media at Ortaköy.
Welcoming and congratulating Paul Farrelly, Professor Dr. Yılmaz said, “What Paul has done is very meaningful and valuable. Only in Europe, more than 50 million is living with diabetes. There are over 7 million diabetic people in Turkey. It is very important for us to reach these people and educate them about the importance of managing diabetes effectively. For several years, we have been telling our patients that they can live a normal life with diabetes. Paul’s challenge is the proof of that.”
After a few minutes rest, Paul Farrelly talked to the media: “I’m very happy to have realized my “marathon” dream of cycling across Europe despite the fact that I suffer from Type 1 diabetes since 2000. I wanted to prove that you can live a normal life and reach your goals despite the chronic disorder. I have cycled about 70 miles every day. It has been really though but I could have monitored my blood glucose levels on a very regular basis thanks to my mobile blood glucose monitoring system. The latest developments in medical technology simplify the life with diabetes and give us the chance to pursue our dreams. I hope that my example encourages other patients to fulfill their dreams.”
Bayer Türk CEO Dr. Sebastian Guth also congratulated Paul Farrelly and emphasized the contribution of innovative products to the management of diabetes: “Paul’s reaching his dream also proves that Bayer scientists, who have been working to develop better blood glucose monitors for almost 70 years, have overcome their challenge. Besides our long tradition of leading the way in diabetes care product innovation such as the first portable blood glucose meter and test strips, Bayer formed the Bayer Diabetes Care DreamFund for showing that Diabetes is no longer a barrier against the people’s dreams. Paul was the winner of Bayer Diabetes Care DreamFund 2008 competition and we are proud to have supported him for chasing after his dream and showing all diabetic people across the world that they can live a normal, even dreamlike life.”
The Bayer Diabetes Care DreamFund – which has been running since 2006 – is a unique competition, offering people with diabetes the opportunity to apply for a grant to help them make their ‘dreams come true’.
