September 26, 2008 – Bayer CropScience in Turkey has opened its first of two Cotton AgroArenas, on Thursday, September 25th, in Bismil, close to Diyarbakir. The AgroArena is a new communication concept to demonstrate farmers in Turkey ways to improve their crop production in yield and quality by using modern growing techniques and state-of-the-art crop protection products. The Cotton AgroArena consists of a cotton field which is specifically dedicated to show different Bayer crop protection and PGR (BGD) solutions to the farmers as well as promising seed varieties from its BioScience department under a joint concept from ‘seed to harvest Bayer’.

The field was chosen by Bayer technical field staff, and after the sowing it was cared exclusively by Bayer with the best knowldge and products available.

“By this concept we want to show what is possible for Turkish farmers today to improve their cotton production. To catch the yield and quality potential of your crop, you need a proper crop management throughout the year, the best use of harvest aids under a strong technical expertise, to be finally in a position to efficiently use modern harvesting technolgies. This should be should be the first objective of the farmers nowadays, looking at increasing input cost and the global competition from other cotton growing countries.” Sven Rappsilber, Country Head of Bayer CropScience in Turkey, explained. Rappsilber outlined that Bayer CropScience has a almost a complete portfolio in cotton, starting from high-quality seeds with outstanding fiber quality, excellent insecticides to high-performance harvest aids – all provided with highest-quality, technical expertise and service of Bayer staff. “We in Bayer CropScience believe that cotton is of strategic importance for Turkey and should have a future in this country, despite of the acreage reduction seen in this year.”

Mustafa Dere, project coordinator and product manager Herbicides and BGDs in Bayer CropScience Turkey adds, “All elements in crop management during the whole year make a difference in the final result, when it comes to prepare the field for mechanical harvesting. This it what we want to demonstrate to our farmers”

Doc. Dr. Fehmi Gülyasar, cotton expert in Bayer CropScience, explains:”One of the most important elements in crop management is the professional use of Harvest aids. Here, the exact timing and dose rates according to the specific climatic conditions and general crop condition of the field are decisive for the success. This needs experience, knowledge and closeness to the individual farmer. Therefore harvest aids usage is a real art. Thus, it is not only the quality of the product which makes the difference, but it is mainly the people behind.”

“Afte the successful implementation of the AgroArena concept in cereals, we are well motivated to expand this concept now to cotton, which is much more challenging.” emphasizes Rappsilber. “In Bismil, we hosted more than 300 guests and plan to host further 700 in Söke, consisting of farmers, ginners, and officials.”
