Leverkusen, June 2008 – In light of the medical emergency and the devastation caused by the
recent earthquake in China, Bayer is increasing its aid to the victims. The company’s aid and
fundraising efforts for the earthquake victims in China now total more than EUR 1.2 million. The
focus remains on providing urgently needed medical care to the injured in the particularly hard-hit
province of Sichuan.
Bayer employees have also been collecting for the earthquake victims, with donations by employees in China already totaling EUR 140,000. Bayer intends to match the donations made by its employees and channel the money to the victims in China via the Red Cross.
In addition to these immediate measures, Bayer currently evaluates projects to make a sustainable contribution to reconstruction in the disaster area.
In Burma, too, Bayer is increasing its donations. On top of the original EUR 145,000 in emergency aid, the company is providing support for farmers particularly affected by the cyclone. As part of an aid project Bayer is donating products to the value of about EUR 60,000 to help farmers start growing rice again.
