Bayer MaterialScience

The new organization, named Bayer MaterialScience-BMS, is composed of the four-existing sections of Bayer Industrial Products; Coatings& Sealant Systems, Polycarbonates, Polyurethane and Thermoplastic Polyurethane. This consolidation allows BMS to grow and strengthen itself further.

BMS serves the products of future in the automotive, construction, electrical and electronics, sports and leisure, packaging and medical technology markets today. With 15.100 employees around the world, sales of 9,738 billion euros were achieved in 2008. While being the leading manufacturer of innovative, high-performance materials for applications in numerous areas of daily life, we aim to achieve the best result together with our customers.

Coatings, adhesives and sealant systems

With its wide portfolio this subgroup offers system solution to a numerous of sectors like furniture, automotive and construction industries.

Our organic coatings based on polyurethane raw materials from Bayer MaterialScience reliably protect surfaces against the effects of weather and chemicals, corrosion and UV-lights, while offering high-quality mechanical properties at the same time.

Our adhesive systems are widely used especially in the automotive, furniture, shoe and construction industries.

Polyurethanes

The Polyurethanes Business Unit (BU PUR) not only holds pole position worldwide, it is also the largest section within Bayer MaterialScience. With a workforce of about 4,400, BU PUR has more employees than any other business unit within Bayer MaterialScience. It contributes around 5.224 billion euros in the year 2007 to the company's total sales – about 50 percent. With its broad range of product brands, BU PUR ensures that its customers always have a tailor-made solution for their projects.

Polyurethanes are used primarily in the automotive, construction and electrical/electronics industries, but also in a number of specialty applications: wheels and tires for forklift trucks, for example, are made from the high-performance polyurethane elastomer, Vulkollan®. The range of application for polyurethane is almost unlimited: mattresses, upholstered furniture, car seats, insulation for refrigerators, car bumpers and leisure shoes, to mention just a few. And other new applications are opening up all the time.

Thermoplastic Polyurethanes

Thermoplastic polyurethanes unite the properties of high-grade polyurethane elastomers with the efficient processability of thermoplastics. Resins under the brand names Desmopan® and Texin® are used in technical films and textile coatings, belts, hoses, cables and profiles, in the automotive sector (interior, exterior, chassis), in a multitude of applications in sports & leisure (e.g. ski and sport shoes and sport equipment) and last but not least in agriculture, mechanical engineering and industrial applications.

Polycarbonates

High-engineering grade Makrolon® and Apec® polycarbonates, together with the Bayblend® and Makroblend® polycarbonate blends, rank among Bayer Material Science’s best-sellers.

With its high heat resistance, glassy-transparency, toughness and mechanical properties Makrolon ^® is widely used in the production of automotive components, data carriers such as CDs and DVDs, reusable 5galon water bottles, and sheet extrusion.

Bayblend ^® is a ABS+PC –Blend, which is widely used in automotive, electric/electronic industries, mostly for the halogen free FR applications in computer and TV-panels. Our PBT+PC Blend Makroblend ^® is preferred in the automotive industry.
